Day 239

We had quite the fiasco on Friday. Papa, Gramma and Christian were flying in for a visit, and we had a day full of errands planned. As I pulled into the Costco parking lot at 11:00AM, Grace said "Mommy, there's something in my nose." I look back and she had stuck a Polly Pocket shoe in her nose! My trusty Garmin was in Dave's car and Costco just so happens to be 30 minutes from home in an area I am unfamiliar with! I tried to get her to blow it out of her nose and she ended up sucking it further up her nose. We headed home to the Urgent Care near our house. After waiting for about an hour, we met with a doctor who was unable to remove the shoe. He referred us to an ENT Doctor about 15 minutes away. Grace was bleeding from the Urgent Care doctor and decided that maybe having a shoe up her nose wasn't so bad after all. So she was not thrilled to go to another doctor!
The ENT doctor also does plastic surgery, so on the card it said "facial surgery." At this point I'm thinking that possibly Grace needs surgery to remove this blasted shoe. Anyway, this doctor was busy, he had 5 emergencies and several other appointments waiting. After 2 hours of waiting, we got into see Dr. Maack. He was wonderful! He numbed her nose, then upon further inspection decided that we should put her in a papoose (a restraint) because he will have 1-2 chances to get this out or it will require surgery. Grace was amazing, we papoosed her and then he was in and out in 20 seconds.
The result: a green Polly Pocket shoe. Lesson learned...at this point it was 4:30pm, and we still had to go to Costco. Polly Pocket shoes are now in the trash can!

  1. First thought: how funny! Second thought: How scary! Those darn Polly Pockets. Did she say why she put the shoe up her nose? Run out of pocket space? Give Grace a big hug for me :)

  2. We have a saying at our house: the only thing that goes up your nose, or in your ears, is your finger. At least THREE times we've had a scare with stuff up the nose. I hope we're out of that "phase." I'm so thankful we've never had to go to the ENT.

The last time it happened was in the STL airport, with a gold bead he found on the ground...went straight up the nose. Thankfully a lady near us had tweezers. She didn't want them back, wonder why? :)

  3. Gail-No, she never said why she put it up her nose! Her story kind of changed as the day wore on, I was almost thinking maybe she was sniffing it and it was so small it was sucked right in...but who knows!

Julie-I love your saying, hilarious! What a blessing that someone had tweezers in STL!
